Westgate

Your Neighbourhood Policing Team is made up of Kent Police beat officers who are dedicated to keeping your community safe. They focus on preventing crime and antisocial behaviour, responding to local concerns, and building strong relationships with residents, community groups and local businesses.

Our officers will:

  • patrol to deter crime and reassure the public

  • hold regular engagement activities in the area, including attending community meetings to share advice and listen to concerns

  • work with partner agencies including councils, schools, charities, and local groups

  • tackle issues like antisocial behaviour, repeat offending, and vulnerability

  • build trust by being visible, approachable, and responsive

Neighbourhood policing is a key part of Kent Police’s commitment to being community-focused, visible, and responsive.

Homelessness /begging.

Issued 03 February 2026

We have been working closely with the Canterbury City Council Homeless Team and the charity Catching Lives to promote the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP). This helps ensure that people who may be at risk in cold weather get the care and support they need. Through this work, officers have identified additional support needs, including helping a vulnerable woman access safe housing.

In February, officers also issued a Community Protection Warning (CPW) and then a Community Protection Notice (CPN) to a man who had set up an encampment in the subway near the police station. A CPW is an early warning that behaviour is causing problems for the community. A CPN is a legal notice that requires the behaviour to stop. Officers supported the man in leaving the area and directed him to Catching Lives for help. Since then, reports of begging have reduced significantly.

Actioned 17 March 2026

E-scooters.

Issued 03 February 2026

Officers continue to stop e‑scooters when they see them and explain the laws around their use. Two bicycles were seized during a joint operation with the Whitefriars Security Team after they were used in an antisocial way. On 1 March, officers also seized an e‑scooter from a repeat offender involved in antisocial behaviour, and a Traffic Offence Report was issued for driving offences.

Fly tipping.

Issued 03 February 2026

At the end of January, officers worked with the Environmental Crime Team from Canterbury City Council to clear 7.5 tonnes of rubbish from the Canterbury Castle grounds. Action is still being taken against the person responsible.

We have also been working with the same team to tackle fly‑tipping in Kirby’s Lane. This joint work helped identify a local shop owner who was responsible for dumping waste, and the Council has taken enforcement action. Your local Beat Team is supporting this by gathering evidence and speaking with those affected.
