Hello all
This isn't new news but I just wanted to keep the ‘vigilance’ momentum up with regards to a particular fraud/scam quite often executed over the phone.
Bank staff and Police Officers (regardless of their rank) will NOT ring you up and ask you to withdraw cash from your account and request that you send it to an ‘address’ via the postal system in order to keep it safe, this would be a MASSIVE RED FLAG that you are speaking with a fraudster and you should end the call immediately. They will try to make you believe that there has been some sort of incident with regards to fraudulent activity on your account or that there's a dodgy member of staff at the branch you bank with and the only way to make safe your money is to withdraw it and send it to an address with the promise that you will get it back once the investigation is over or a police officer will ring you and say that they're DC Joe Bloggs from a particular police force and something has happened whereby the money in your bank account is compromised and you will need to withdraw it or transfer funds and send it to an address.
They will also NOT attend your home in person to collect any money.
The above examples are just a few that these fraudsters use to bamboozle their next victim into sending their money to criminals.
Even if there has been a genuine issue with your bank account, bank staff will NEVER ring you to withdraw or transfer any funds and the police will also absolutely NOT request this either.
There are not only victims of this type of scam/fraud nationally but also here on the Romney Marsh and it could potentially happen to anyone of us although many of the victims targeted are elderly ladies and gentlemen so please share this information amongst your elderly relatives and any local groups where the elderly attend.
Also, please don't judge those victims because they're already feeling silly for falling for the scam and it can be very upsetting for them when they realise what's happened but in reality they've felt pressured or have been ‘caught on the hop’ and one of the most common reactions to this type of crime from someone who hasn't been targeted is ‘how stupid can someone be to send their money in the post to somebody they don’t know!' This isn't helpful as the victims know this after it's too late.
So please look out for elderly relatives/friends especially those who live alone, there are ‘call barring’ services that you can speak to phone providers about so that calls are intercepted before you answer them and then it's up to you whether or not you want to speak to the caller.
