Keeping Chatham High Street Safe – Meet Your Medway Council Street Officers

Did you know that Medway Council's Street Officers regularly patrol Chatham High Street to help keep the town centre safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone?

Working alongside local businesses, partner agencies and Kent Police, Street Scene Enforcement Officers play an important role in addressing issues that affect the day-to-day experience of residents, workers and visitors to the town centre.

Their responsibilities include:

✅ Tackling environmental issues such as littering, fly-tipping and breaches of local regulations.

✅ Engaging with individuals involved in anti-social behaviour and helping to address concerns raised by the community.

✅ Providing support and signposting to vulnerable individuals, including those who may be experiencing homelessness, substance misuse issues or other welfare concerns.

✅ Working closely with local businesses to identify problems affecting the High Street and taking appropriate action where necessary.

✅ Helping to maintain a visible presence throughout the town centre, providing reassurance to members of the public and acting as an extra set of eyes and ears for agencies working to keep Medway safe.

The Street Scene Enforcement Team is often one of the first points of contact for members of the public who need advice, support or assistance whilst in the town centre. Their regular patrols allow them to build positive relationships with local businesses, residents and visitors, helping to identify issues early and work towards long-term solutions.

By working collaboratively with partners, the team helps address concerns around anti-social behaviour, street drinking, environmental offences and community safety issues, contributing to a cleaner, safer and more welcoming Chatham High Street for everyone.
