Community Update – Tackling Shoplifting in Southborough |
||
|
Good Afternoon Residents,
I would like to provide an update regarding a shoplifting operation that took place at Tesco Express in Southborough on 10 May 2026.
At the time, I assisted the store following the deployment of additional security staff. As a result of this proactive approach, ten separate individuals were identified and dealt with for shoplifting offences in a single day.
I am now able to provide this update as all offenders have been dealt with and the associated police investigations have concluded.
All ten individuals have now been banned from the store. Police action was taken in every case, with some offenders receiving out-of-court disposals, while others have been charged with offences and will be appearing before the courts.
While shoplifting is sometimes viewed as a low-level offence, the impact on businesses and the wider community should not be underestimated.
Retailers such as Tesco ultimately bear the cost of theft, which can contribute to increased prices for customers. For smaller independent businesses, persistent shoplifting can place pressure on the store, affect staff morale, and in some cases threaten the long-term viability of the business.
There is also a broader community impact. Repeat shoplifting can lead to increased security measures, a reduced sense of safety for residents and shoppers, and additional pressure on retail staff who are simply trying to carry out their jobs.
The fact that ten offenders were identified in a single day demonstrates the scale of the issue being experienced at this location.
I will continue to work closely with retailers across Southborough to identify offenders, prevent repeat offending, and take appropriate action where necessary.
Thank you to local businesses and residents for your continued support.
PC Danny Barnes
