Vehicle Crime Awareness Update

We’d like to share some advice to help keep your vehicle safe, following recent national trends in vehicle crime.

Recent data shows an overall reduction in theft of vehicles compared to last year, although there has been a small rise in theft from vehicles (items being taken from inside cars).

Targeting items left inside vehicles

Using keyless theft technology to gain access without keys

Stealing specific vehicle parts such as steering wheels, consoles or van components

Taking high-value accessories like roof boxes and roof tents

How you can protect your vehicle:

Always lock your vehicle and double-check handles

Keep keys and fobs away from doors/windows and consider a Faraday pouch (for keyless vehicles)

Remove all valuables, or keep them out of sight

Consider using physical security, such as steering wheel locks

Park in well-lit, busy areas or secure car parks where possible

Remember: Even quick stops or “just a moment” can be enough time for opportunistic thieves.

If you notice suspicious behaviour around vehicles or in car parks, please report it.

If a crime is in progress, call 999. Otherwise report via 101 or online.
