I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Vehicle crime (theft from or theft of), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Over the past few months, a number of vehicle thefts have been reported across the Maidstone district, causing understandable concern within our communities. In response, the Neighbourhood Task Force, alongside Neighbourhood Beat Officers PC Denney and I, have been carrying out targeted enquiries to identify those responsible and disrupt this offending.
I am pleased to inform residents that, within the last week, officers located a suspected “chop shop” operating within the Harrietsham, Lenham & North Downs ward. A “chop shop” is a term used to describe a location where stolen vehicles are taken to be broken down into parts or altered to hide their identity. These parts may then be sold on, or the vehicle may be disguised to prevent it from being recognised as stolen. This location has now been disrupted, and a number of individuals have been arrested.
Sites such as these are often linked to organised criminal activity and can operate quietly within otherwise normal communities. Disrupting them helps prevent further vehicle thefts and removes a key element that supports this type of crime. While this is a significant step, our work continues, and we remain committed to tackling vehicle crime, preventing further offences, and keeping our communities safe.
We would strongly encourage residents to report anything they believe to be suspicious, including unusual vehicle movements, vehicles being dismantled or stored in inappropriate locations, or activity that appears out of place for the area. Even information that may seem minor can be vital in helping us prevent crime and take further action.
Residents are also reminded to ensure vehicles are left secure and to report suspicious behaviour promptly via the appropriate channels. Information from the public is invaluable and directly supports our work. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
