Police have been made aware of a marked increase in the use of counterfeit currency within the Westerham area, following reports from local businesses.
Several businesses have reported receiving fake banknotes during suspicious low‑value transactions. The counterfeit notes seized so far include £5 and £20 denominations. Although the forgeries may appear genuine to the naked eye, they do not contain key Bank of England security features, including: (Examples can be seen in the images below.) Businesses that accept cash are strongly encouraged to check banknotes using an automatic note detector or an appropriate UV scanner, and to remain vigilant during cash transactions.
