A coordinated effort by police and the local community has led to the arrest of a male suspect in connection with a distraction theft, believed to be carried out by an organised crime group (OCG) operating in the town. On Monday 16th December 2024, Safer Sevenoaks ShopSafe – a local initiative aimed at protecting shops and residents from crime – alerted the police to a group of individuals acting suspiciously in the town. The group were monitored via council CCTV before a local beat officer, located a male suspect in South Park who matched the description provided by ShopSafe. After a stop and search, the suspect was found in possession of a hollow spike and was promptly arrested for being in possession of a sharply pointed object. Meanwhile, a victim approached officers, describing an attempted distraction theft that took place in the STAG car park. The victim reported having withdrawn a sum of cash from a local bank before being followed to his vehicle. Once at his car he placed his items inside his car and was distracted while an attempt was made to steal the cash in his vehicle. The male was further arrested for participation in an organised crime group (OCG), going equipped for theft, and attempted theft. Kent Police continue to investigate the incident and are working to identify the other members of the group. The public is reminded to remain vigilant, especially when withdrawing large sums of money. | ||||
