20mph Speed Limit - Sevenoaks

Introducing the 20mph Speed Limit

(message sent on behalf of Sevenoaks Town Council)

  • Sevenoaks Town Council is pleased to announce the upcoming implementation of a 20mph speed limit across select roads in Sevenoaks town. Scheduled to take effect from 1st October 2024, this initiative aims to enhance community safety, promote active travel, and mitigate environmental impact.
  • Community Safety and Benefits

Backed by evidence showing significant reductions in accidents and improved air quality in urban areas, the 20mph scheme reflects a growing trend among communities prioritising pedestrian safety and sustainable transport options. Research indicates that lower vehicle speeds not only decrease the likelihood of accidents but also foster smoother traffic flows—a positive outcome contrary to common assumptions.

    Project Details and Funding

The scheme, solely funded by Sevenoaks Town Council through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), involves the installation of new signage and road markings. Notably, this signage-only approach, estimated to cost £153,456, avoids the more expensive option of physical traffic calming measures. Residents need not worry about an increase in Council Tax, as all funding is derived from existing CIL funds, which developers contribute.

    Roads Included and Excluded

Affected roads are clearly marked on an interactive map available on the Sevenoaks Town Council website. Key exclusions from the scheme include major roads like St Botolph's Road and Hitchen Hatch Lane, ensuring efficient traffic management on critical routes.

    Implementation Timeline

Works will commence on 12th August 2024, focusing on signage and road markings, with completion anticipated by 1st September 2024. Additional efforts may extend beyond this period, prioritizing night-time work to minimize disruption during peak hours.

    Enforcement and Further Information

Enforcement of the 20mph limit will be consistent with standard speed limit protocols. Residents can stay informed about road closures and project updates via the Sevenoaks Town Council website and social media channels.
